Red Lechwe
Kobus leche leche · Mammal
A golden-brown antelope of 50 to 120 kg of the floodplains bordering swamps in Zambia, Angola, Botswana and the Congo; it is the commonest large mammal of the Okavango Delta (about 88,000). It grazes the grasses of flooded meadows, in herds sometimes thousands strong, and flees predators into knee-deep water, where its water-repellent legs make it fast. Only males bear the long lyre-shaped horns. It has long been hunted and poached for profit.
