Red Kangaroo
Osphranter rufus · Mammal
The red kangaroo, the largest living marsupial, stands up to 1.8 m and roams the open plains, scrub and desert of western and central Australia, needing a few trees for shade. It rests in the shade by day and grazes at dusk and through the night, in small mobs of females and young with one or a few males. It defends itself with kicks and blows of its clawed feet, and on the roads it leaps in front of vehicles. Australia harvests it under licence for lean meat and leather, over half a million in 2023.
