Polar Bear
Ursus maritimus · Mammal
A solitary hunter of the Arctic pack ice that follows the ice for hundreds of kilometres and comes ashore more often as the ice shrinks; only pregnant females den for the winter. Meetings are rare, but it can and does kill people. Arctic peoples took its fur, meat and fat, never its liver, which poisons, and traders paid well for its skin.
