Plains zebras graze the open savannas and light woodland of eastern and southern Africa in family bands of one stallion and a few mares, which gather into great herds on the seasonal march after rain and fresh grass. They are no threat to a traveller, though herders fence and shoot them for competing with cattle. Their striped hides were long prized and their meat still feeds local people.
