Olm
Proteus anguinus · Amphibian
The olm is a pale, blind salamander about a hand and a half long that lives in the waters of caves along the Adriatic, in Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and northeast Italy, often hundreds of metres underground. It stays put for long spells, sheltering in groups under stones and in cracks. People took nothing useful from it; today it draws visitors to the caves and appears on a Slovenian coin.
