Niphargus
Niphargus · Crustacean
Whitish, eyeless amphipods, the largest genus of freshwater amphipods, that live in caves and groundwater across Europe and western Asia as far as Arabia and Iran, though not in the Nordic countries and hardly in Iberia. They are among the main animals of the groundwater: the Dinaric Alps alone hold at least 45 species, and six live in the British Isles. Some live in thermal waters, and some can go more than 200 days without food.
