An endangered antelope of South Sudan and Ethiopia, most of it in the Sudd, where it keeps to shallow water at the edge of the deep swamps. Males weigh 90 to 120 kg, are blackish-brown with a white patch over the shoulders and carry long ridged horns; the hornless females are golden brown. It feeds at dawn and dusk on grasses and water plants, wades and swims, and fights in the water horn to horn. Lions, crocodiles, hyenas and people hunt it.
