A European bat with pale wings, brown above and greyish white below, weighing 7 to 10 g, found across most of Europe, parts of the Near East and North Africa, from sea level up to about 2,000 m. In summer it roosts in tree holes, buildings and bat boxes near woods, parkland and open country with scattered trees; in winter it hibernates in caves, mineshafts, tunnels and cellars, hidden in cracks near the entrance. It catches insects in flight, but also picks spiders and caterpillars off the foliage and lands on the ground to chase its prey. It is used in traditional medicine in North Africa.
