Narwhal
Monodon monoceros · Mammal
The narwhal keeps to deep Arctic water and fjords off Canada and Greenland, in small pods that join into herds of hundreds when the ice drives them south to winter under the pack, breathing at cracks and leads. The male carries a single long spiral tusk. Inuit use nearly every part of it, and its tusk travelled to Europe to be sold as unicorn horn.
