A big green to dark brown crab of the estuaries and mangroves of Africa, Asia and Australia, up to 26 cm across the shell and 3.5 kg. Young crabs keep to the mangroves at low tide while adults live below the tide line, and they are fierce cannibals: hard-shelled crabs attack and eat others while they moult. Sought after for its size and dense meat, it is both fished and farmed.
