A white, bearded climber of the sheer cliffs and rock faces above the tree line in the mountains of western North America, from Washington and Montana to the Yukon and southeast Alaska. Nannies and kids keep in loose bands of up to 50, while billies wander alone or in twos and threes; cougars, wolves and bears hunt it. It is not harmless: billies fight in showy, sometimes dangerous scuffles, and in 2021 a goat gored a grizzly bear to death in Yoho National Park. Northwest Coast peoples gathered the wool it sheds in spring for their weaving, and its hunt is famous for being hard, though the meat is not much praised.
