Mexican Free-tailed Bat
Tadarida brasiliensis · Mammal
A small bat of the Americas, from the southern United States to Chile and Argentina, that roosts by the million in big caves; Bracken Cave in Texas holds nearly 20 million. At dusk the colony pours out and flies up to 50 km and over 3,000 m high to eat moths and beetles; some populations migrate south for the winter. Their guano piles up metres deep: it was mined for the saltpetre of Confederate gunpowder and is still sold as fertiliser. The dust of a guano cave carries a lung disease, and the bats can carry rabies.
