Lion
Panthera leo · Mammal
Lions live in prides of related females with one or more resident males across the savannas, scrub and open woodland of Africa south of the Sahara, with a last population in the Gir Forest of India. They sleep most of the day and hunt from late afternoon into the night; a lion that meets a person on foot usually runs off, but lions pushed against farms take cattle and sometimes people. Maasai warriors who killed a lion kept its mane, tail and claws as honours.
