Leopard
Panthera pardus · Mammal
The leopard lives alone across Africa, Asia and the Russian Far East, in savanna, grassland, rainforest, dry forest, conifer forest, scrub and desert, and in mountains as high as 5,600 m on Kilimanjaro; it even lives on the edge of towns. It hunts mostly at night. Injured or sickly leopards may hunt people as easy prey: the Panar leopard was thought to have killed over 400 people and the leopard of Rudraprayag more than 125. Its spotted skin is worn by chiefs and warriors as a mark of courage and is still smuggled and sold.
