Humpbacks travel each year between cold feeding waters and warm seas where they breed, from the poles to the tropics, and come close to shore along some coasts. Males slap the water with their long flippers and crowd boats that near a mother and calf, but they hurt no one. They were hunted for oil, meat and bone meal, and fishermen curse them for tearing nets and traps.
