Hot-spring Snake
Thermophis baileyi · Reptile
Also called Bailey's snake, an olive-green keelback up to about 76 cm long, found only at high altitude on the Tibetan Plateau, in a narrow strip between the Transhimalaya and the Himalaya; its genus probably lives higher than any other snake in the world. It keeps to hot springs low in sulphur, in river valleys with rocky slopes and plant-lined banks: against the cold it is active only a few hours a day and spends much of its time near the warm water. It is endangered, as geothermal works destroy its springs.
