Himalayan Snowcock
Tetraogallus himalayensis · Bird
A game bird of the pheasant family on the alpine pastures and steep rocky ridges of the Himalaya and the Pamir, above the treeline and near the snowline: 4,000 to 5,000 m in summer, down to 2,400 m in hard winters. Small groups walk slowly uphill picking grass, shoots and berries, then fly off to the next hill; approached from above, they dive down the valley on open wings. Its loud three-part whistle is a familiar sound of the mountain spring. Nevada brought it in from Hunza as a game bird, and it now lives wild in the Ruby Mountains.
