Helmeted Hornbill
Young helmeted hornbill in the Temengor rainforest, Malaysia · Nur Nafis Naim, CC BY-SA 4.0, Wikimedia Commons

A huge hornbill, 110 to 120 cm plus 50 cm of tail feathers, of the forests of the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo, Thailand and Myanmar, living mostly on the fruit of strangler figs. Pairs hold a territory, and males fight in the air, clashing their casques; its hooting call ends in a cackle like laughter. Its almost solid casque, "hornbill ivory" or red ivory, was carved in China and Japan, and poachers now hunt it for that trade; the Orang Ulu let only those who had taken a head wear its feathers.
