Greater Horseshoe Bat
Rhinolophus ferrumequinum · Mammal
This bat ranges from Britain and Japan through temperate Eurasia to northwest Africa and northern India, hunting insects over wooded country by night. It roosts hanging from the roofs of karst caves and hollows under boulders, and sleeps through the winter there in clusters, waking now and then. Caves that shelter bats pile up guano, which was dug for saltpetre to make gunpowder, though breathing its dust can bring on a lung fungus.
