The great bustard walks the open, flat or rolling grassland and grain fields from Morocco and Spain to East Asia, and shuns places people disturb. Males display and fight on traditional courting grounds, and outside the breeding season the birds keep in flocks of one sex. Most European birds stay put in winter while Asian ones fly far south.
