Goose Barnacle
Pollicipes pollicipes · Crustacean
A barnacle 10 to 12 cm long on a fleshy stalk like a thumb, growing in clusters on wave-battered rocks between the tides, from Ireland and southern England through France and Iberia to Senegal. As percebes it is a costly delicacy, up to 90 euros a kilo in Spain, harvested for over 10,000 years; on the Galician coast the percebeiros scrape it off at low tide at great risk, often held on a rope by a companion. Only the inside of the stalk is eaten; in France each picker may take three kilos, and people once believed barnacle geese hatched from it.
