Gargoyle
The stryge, a chimera of Notre-Dame brooding over Paris, etching by Charles Méryon, 1853 · Charles Méryon, Le Stryge, etching, 1853, Public domain, Wikimedia Commons

Gargoyles are living stone that perch motionless among carved statues on rooftops, ruins and cliffs, then come alive to attack. They are cruel and patient and enjoy fear, and old cities often hide a few among their real carvings.
