A black cormorant with a green sheen, a yellow throat patch and, in the breeding season, a small crest, of the rocky coasts of western and southern Europe, southwest Asia and North Africa, and rare inland. It nests on rock ledges, in crevices or in small caves, building an untidy heap of rotting seaweed or twigs cemented with its own droppings, and lays three eggs. One of the deepest divers of its family, it hunts on the sea bottom, mostly for sand eels.
