Native to Spain, Portugal and a corner of France and North Africa, the rabbit digs warrens in dry, sandy ground beside brushy cover and feeds mostly at night. Colonies of six to ten adults thump the ground to warn each other. It gave game meat and skins for the fur trade, and once loose it ruins crops and pasture.
