European Hedgehog
Erinaceus europaeus · Mammal
A round, insect-eating mammal of about a kilo covered in up to 6,000 brown and white spines, found from Ireland and Iberia to Scandinavia and north-west Russia. It lives on woodland edges, in meadows, pastures, fields and orchards and in village gardens, hunting earthworms, slugs, beetles and caterpillars by night. It rolls into a ball when alarmed and hibernates in a winter nest; badgers, foxes and eagle-owls eat it all the same.
