European golden plover in breeding plumage, Iceland · Charles J. Sharp, CC BY-SA 4.0, Wikimedia Commons

A thickset plover, mottled gold and black above, that breeds on the Arctic tundra and the moors and blanket bogs from Iceland to central Siberia; it is a typical bird of the Flow Country of Scotland. In winter it flocks on ploughed land and short meadows from Ireland to the Mediterranean. In Iceland the first plover of the year means spring has come, and the news is in the papers.
