European Bison
Bison bonasus · Mammal
The wisent once roamed the lowland forests of Europe from the Pyrenees to the Caucasus, grazing glades and meadows in small mixed herds that gather into larger bands in winter. A bull weighs as much as a horse and is best given room. Medieval hunters killed it for hide, meat and drinking horns until the last wild one fell in 1921.
