Desert Locust

In quiet years desert locusts live scattered and alone from Mauritania across the Sahara and Arabia to northwest India. After a run of rainy seasons they crowd together, change colour and take off as swarms that can cover hundreds of square kilometres and fly with the wind up to 150 km a day. A swarm strips crops and pasture wherever it lands, bringing hunger to whole regions, though the insects themselves harm no one.
