Europe's largest common pigeon, grey with a pinkish breast and white on the neck and wings, living in woods near clearings and fields, in parks and more and more in towns. It eats leaves, shoots, grain, berries and, in autumn, acorns, gathers in huge flocks outside the breeding season, and is a pest of cereal crops. Western birds stay put, while those of the north and east migrate, crossing the Pyrenees to winter on the acorns of the Iberian dehesas.
