The warthog is the one wild pig that grazes, living in the open and wooded savannas, grasslands and woodlands of sub-Saharan Africa, up to 3,000 m. It feeds by day and spends the night in a burrow, which it backs into tusks first; females and young live in sounders of up to 18, while grown boars mostly go alone. It is hunted for meat for the pot and the market, and its ever-growing tusks are carved like ivory for the tourist trade. It raids crops and carries African swine fever.
