Common Quail
Coturnix coturnix · Bird
A small brown game bird of seventy to one hundred and forty grams, far more often heard than seen: the male's call of three quick notes rings from tall grass, grain fields and clover. It breeds from Europe to Central Asia and flies by night to winter in Africa and southern India, crossing the Mediterranean where it is netted by the million. It eats weed seeds, spilt grain and insects.
