Common Pheasant
Phasianus colchicus · Bird
A long-tailed game bird native to Asia and the Caucasus; the cock is copper, chestnut and gold with a green head and a red wattle, the hen a mottled brown. Brought into Europe in Roman times and naturalised in Britain around 1059, it lives in woodland, farmland, scrub and wetland, nests on the ground and roosts in trees at night. It would rather run, but bursts up with a loud whirr of wings when flushed; the cock keeps a harem of hens.
