Common Eland
Taurotragus oryx · Mammal
The eland is a huge antelope, bulls up to 1,000 kg with corkscrew horns, living in savanna, woodland, scrub and open or mountain grassland from Ethiopia to South Africa, up to about 4,600 m, but never in dense forest. It feeds in the morning and evening and rests in the shade at midday, in herds of up to 25. It gives a lot of tender meat and fine hides, and is farmed and even milked in southern Africa and Russia: a cow can give 7 kg of milk a day, far richer than cow's milk.
