Common Eider
Somateria mollissima · Bird
The common eider is a sea duck of Arctic and northern coasts that nests among the rocks of small offshore islands and on the tundra. It travels in flocks of tens to thousands, and the females pool their ducklings into crèches against predators. Its down, plucked by the female to line her nest, can be gathered without harming eggs or bird, and it fills luxury pillows and quilts.
