Common Adder
Vipera berus · Reptile
The adder basks on sunny heath, moor, woodland edge and wet ground, close to thick cover, and climbs high into the Alps. From autumn it sleeps underground, sometimes a hundred together in one den. Its bite is very painful and needs care but rarely kills; country folk rubbed adder oil on aching ears and its venom is milked for antivenom.
