Chuckwalla
Sauromalus ater · Reptile
A plant-eating lizard up to half a metre of the Mojave and Sonoran deserts, on old lava flows, rocky hillsides and outcrops, feeding on desert plants such as the flowers and leaves of creosote bush. It is about from spring to late summer and lies dormant through the cool months. When threatened it slips into a crevice and puffs up its lungs to wedge itself in; the native peoples of Death Valley ate it, hooking it out with a barbed bone point that pierced and deflated it.
