Chamois
Rupicapra rupicapra · Mammal
The chamois lives on steep, rocky ground in the mountains of Europe and the Caucasus, from the Pyrenees and the Alps to Turkey; it summers on alpine meadows above the trees and winters lower down in the forest, living on lichens, mosses and young pine shoots and fasting when the snow is deep. Females and young keep in herds of 15 to 30 while adult males go alone. It runs at 50 km/h over rough ground and leaps 2 m high or 6 m long. It is prized game for its meat, its hide gave the soft chamois leather, and the tuft of winter hair from its neck and back (gamsbart) decorates alpine hats.
