Black-tailed Prairie Dog
Cynomys ludovicianus · Mammal
A plump ground squirrel of under two kilos, living in 'towns' of burrows on the short-grass plains and sagebrush steppe from Saskatchewan to Mexico; one Texas town was said to hold four hundred million animals. Each crater-rimmed mound is a lookout, and a sharp alarm call sends the whole family underground. It stays active all winter, keeps the grass short where bison like to graze, and its fleas carry plague.
