Black Rhinoceros
Diceros bicornis · Mammal
Black rhinos browse the savanna, scrub and desert edges of eastern and southern Africa, never more than a day's walk from water, and mostly alone or as a mother with her calf. Startled, they charge, often from curiosity more than intent, but a charge can still injure or kill. Their horn was carved into the handles of Yemeni daggers and ground for Chinese medicine, which has driven them close to extinction.
