Bighorn Sheep
Ovis canadensis · Mammal
Bighorn sheep live on alpine meadows, grassy slopes and foothills close to cliffs, from the Rocky Mountains of Canada down to the hot deserts of the American Southwest and Mexico; most herds summer high and winter in sheltered valleys, as they cannot cope with deep snow. They go in groups of 8 to 10, sometimes over 100, and escape onto the cliffs. A ram's horns can weigh 14 kg. Native peoples and early settlers prized the meat, and Native Americans made the horns into large ceremonial spoons and handles.
