Bearded Seal
Erignathus barbatus · Mammal
The bearded seal lives in shallow Arctic seas, rarely more than one to an ice floe, and drifts with the pack ice south in winter and north in summer. In spring the males sing under water to claim their ground. Inuit hunt it for meat and blubber, and its tough hide covered their umiak boats and made their boots and harnesses.
