The swamp deer of India and Nepal, whose stags carry 10 to 14 tines, hence its Hindi name, "twelve-horned"; stags weigh 170 to 280 kg. The commonest race, with splayed hooves, is made for the flooded grasslands of the Ganges plain; it grazes grasses and water plants all day and herds in groups of 8 to 20, up to 60. Unregulated hunting and the turning of its wetlands into fields cost it most of its range; it survives mostly in parks such as Kaziranga, Kanha and Shuklaphanta.
