Bactrian Camel
Camelus bactrianus · Mammal · Domestic
The two-humped camel is herded across the cold deserts and steppes of Central Asia, from Iran and Afghanistan to Mongolia, the Gobi and Xinjiang, and up into the mountains; it bears frosts of -30 °C and summers of 50 °C, and eats snow for water. It was the beast of the Silk Road, carrying 170 to 250 kg some 47 km a day. In the autumn rut a male turns violent and can be dangerous to people. Herders live off its milk (fermented into kumis), meat, wool, hide and dung for fuel.
