Axe Beak
Diatryma, the giant flightless bird of the Eocene, restoration by Erwin S. Christman, 1917 · Erwin S. Christman, Diatryma (Gastornis), restoration, 1917, Public domain, Wikimedia Commons

A tall flightless bird with a hatchet of a beak, roaming open grassland in small flocks. Ill-tempered and quick, it attacks travellers who come too close, though some plains folk tame them as mounts or draught birds.
