Asian Elephant
Elephas maximus · Mammal
Bulls weigh 3.5 to 6 tonnes; cows and calves live in family herds while grown bulls wander alone, in evergreen and deciduous forest, scrub and grassland from sea level to 3,000 m, eating 12 to 18 hours a day. Elephants kill some 400 people a year in India and raid crops. Only some bulls carry tusks (cows have none or small "tushes", and in Sri Lanka most bulls are tuskless), so ivory is never a sure prize. Tamed for 4,500 years, they still haul timber; they are poached for ivory, meat and skin.
