Argali
Ovis ammon · Mammal
The argali, the largest wild sheep, grazes the grassy slopes and arid valleys of the mountains of Central Asia, from Kazakhstan and the Altai to the Himalaya and Tibet, anywhere from a few hundred metres to nearly 6,000. Rams and ewes keep to separate herds of a few to over a hundred head and stay in the same country all their lives, climbing higher in summer. The rams' spiral horns can reach 190 cm and 23 kg; people hunt it for meat, horns and trophies, and the horn goes into Chinese medicine.
