Arctic Hare
Lepus arcticus · Mammal
A big hare of 3 to 5 kg on the rocky plateaus, mountain tundra and treeless coasts of Greenland and the Canadian Arctic, white in winter and, in the far north, white all year. Usually alone, it sometimes gathers in bands of a hundred or more and can bound at 64 km/h; foxes, wolves, lynx, snowy owls and gyrfalcons take it. Arctic peoples eat its lean, full-flavoured white meat and make gloves, hats and bandages of its soft, absorbent fur, using every part but the guts.
