Archelon
Archelon, the giant sea turtle of the Cretaceous, restoration from H. F. Osborn's The Origin and Evolution of Life, 1917 · Henry Fairfield Osborn, The Origin and Evolution of Life, figure, 1917, Public domain, Wikimedia Commons

The archelon is a giant sea turtle of primeval waters, larger than a rowing boat, with a hooked beak that can crush a shell or a hull plank. It is usually placid but bites hard when cornered. Castaways on a lost island sometimes find its nests in the warm sand.
