American Pika
Ochotona princeps · Mammal
The pika is a small round cousin of the hare that lives in the scree and boulder fields fringed by alpine meadows in the mountains of western North America, from British Columbia to New Mexico. All summer each one cuts grasses and flowers and stacks them as hay under the rocks, then lives on its haypiles through the winter instead of hibernating. Each guards its own patch of rock and whistles a sharp alarm at hawks, weasels and coyotes. It dies in a few hours above about 25 °C without shade, and gives people nothing to hunt.
