Herds of related cows and calves, from a handful to about seventy, roam the savannas, woodlands and scrub of central and southern Africa, while grown bulls wander alone or in small bachelor groups. They feed day and night and sleep only a few hours; farmers who try to drive them out of their crops can be chased down and killed. People hunted them for their tusks, their meat, and their ears and feet, worked into leather goods and furniture.
